  • .......... AN ENLIGHTENED PEOPLE

The stories that supported, and support, Christianity
are largely based on an ancient and untenable world-view.
A sun that circles the earth; biological ignorance; witches and magic;
legends of an impossible past; stories without evidence;
a flat earth with hell below and heaven above;
a God imagined as a superior form of man.

The Enlightenment brought new learning and reasoning.
The central doctrines of the Enlightenment were individual liberty to reason
along with religious tolerance, in opposition to the fixed dogmas of the Church.
The Enlightenment was marked by an emphasis on the scientific method and analysis,
along with increased questioning of religious orthodoxy.

The philospher EMMANUEL KANT (1724-1804) explained pernicious religious immaturity.
As Enlightenment brings man's emergence from his self-incurred immaturity
the church uses its power and doctrine to constrain public behaviour.
The Church thus tries to control the growth of reason,
constraining the growth and progress of mankind.

The use of Reason led to critical analysis of religious texts
and discovery of facts that rendered much ancient legend untenable.
Such things as archaeology, space travel and Evolution
undermined the fixed concepts of Christianity.

The powerful principle of original sin was no longer viable.
When Evolution denied any initial fall from a perfect existence,
the doctrine of the Atonement could no longer be supported,
so undermining the foundation of medieval theology.

The inerrancy of Scripture, as the Holy Bible, the Word of God, was passed.
The concept of "Gospel Truth" could no longer be applied to the ancient writings.
A new Gospel is needed; Good News for an enlightened people;
for people who can think and reason for themselves,
who can all be free to follow where Jesus led.
